Changes Are Coming—Here’s What That Means for Homeowners in Central Ohio
If you’ve heard rumblings about new HVAC regulations in 2025, you’re not alone. This year, the industry is officially saying goodbye to R-410A refrigerant and introducing a new, more environmentally friendly standard.
At Sears Heating and Cooling, we’re committed to helping Central Ohio homeowners stay ahead of the curve—without the confusion. So, here’s what you need to know about the refrigerant change, how it impacts your home comfort system, and why it might even save you money in the long run.
Why Is Refrigerant Changing?
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is phasing out R-410A, commonly used in HVAC systems for over a decade. Why? Because while R-410A doesn’t harm the ozone layer like its predecessor (R-22), it still has a high global warming potential (GWP).
Enter: R-454B and R-32, the leading replacements. These new refrigerants:
- Have a significantly lower GWP
- Are more energy-efficient
- Help the U.S. align with global climate initiatives and the AIM Act, which calls for a 40% phasedown in HFCs by 2024–2028
🔧 What Does This Mean for Your HVAC System?
If you currently have a system that uses R-410A, don’t panic—you don’t need to replace it right away. But here are a few key takeaways:
✅ Existing systems are still serviceable
Sears Heating and Cooling will continue to maintain and repair R-410A units. However, R-410A will become more expensive and harder to find over time.
🚫 New systems after January 1, 2025, will use the new refrigerants
If you’re planning to upgrade your system this year or next, your new unit will likely use R-454B, which is more eco-friendly and compliant with federal regulations.
🧯 Safety note: R-454B is mildly flammable
While completely safe when installed correctly, these new refrigerants are classified as A2L, meaning special equipment, training, and protocols are required for handling and installation. Don’t worry—we’re already certified and ready.
Why Upgrading Now Might Make Sense
If your HVAC system is more than 10 years old, now is a smart time to consider a replacement. Upgrading before prices on older refrigerant systems spike can save you money in the long run—and improve your energy efficiency and indoor air quality today.
Plus, many manufacturers are offering rebates and incentives on systems that use the new refrigerants. We’ll help you navigate those options and maximize your savings.
